HOSPITAL GOES TOBACCO-FREE
Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and St. Joseph
Hospital for Specialty Care implemented policies today
that prohibit the use of tobacco anywhere on hospital
property. This initiative takes effect on the date of
the Great American Smokeout, a national recognition
aimed at encouraging Americans to quit smoking. They
join with all Rhode Island hospitals in going tobacco-free
on this date.
Organizationally, as well as individuals, we
must lead by example in the effort to reduce the illness
and death that results from smoking and tobacco products,
stated John M. Fogarty, president and CEO of St. Joseph
Health Services of Rhode Island. This policy will
also support our mission to provide quality health care
in a clean, safe and healthy environment, he continued.
Realizing this policy may cause inconvenience to some,
the St. Joseph organization is offering programs and
tools that help tobacco users overcome their addiction.
The tobacco-free environment further aides these individuals
in their efforts. Those wishing to use tobacco are encouraged
to leave hospital property and are asked to avoid loitering
or the disposal of materials on public or private property.
The tobacco-free hospital campus initiative was made
possible through the support of the American Cancer
Society and Jenn Lee Design.
